4/20 at Hippie Hill is a San Francisco tradition said to date back to the1970's. Each year, tens of thousands of people organically arrive from all over to celebrate the use of Cannabis. This years celebration is very special as it marks the first year that cannabis will be legalized for adult-use in California, and the second year that the event will be officially organized in partnership with various city departments.

Is this a free event? 
Yes, this is a free event. 

What time should I get there? 
Gates open at 10:00 a.m. PST. We HIGHLY SUGGEST early arrival as entrances get congested in the later afternoon you do not want to miss the legendary moment. 

What time will the event end? 
All music and event programming will end at 5:00 p.m. PST, and all attendees must exit the official event grounds by 6:00 p.m. PST.

Do I need to bring proof of registration to the event? 
Proof of registration is not required. Eventbrite registration is not required. 

What is the age requirement to attend? 
You must be 18 years or older to attend the event. 

Can I purchase cannabis inside the event? 
Currently as the city still works to create regulations and ordinance around Cannabis events, sales of cannabis inside the event is prohibited. We strongly discourage patrons from buying any unlicensed untested product that they may come across inside the park. There are many great dispensaries all around San Francisco you can stock up at prior to the event. 

Can I bring my own Cannabis? 
Yes, you can bring your own cannabis into the event. We have a strict no glass rule, do not bring your glassware or glass storage containers. This is a safety precaution. One of our sponsors will be giving out free rolling papers! 

Can I bring food? 
You may bring food as long as it is not in large coolers or trays. We do not allow mass distribution or sale of food products. Any large amounts of baked goods or food items packaged for distribution may be confiscated by security at the gates. 

What if it rains? 
This is a rain or shine event. 

Can I bring my children?
No minors, regardless if accompanied by a parent or guardian, are allowed into this year’s event. Anyone under the age of 18 is prohibited from entering. 

Can I come in and out? 
Yes, This is a free event. You may exit and re-enter. 

Can I bring my bong? 

Only if it is not glass. For safety reasons we have a no glass rule.
        

Love is in the House: Stephen and Mystic Marley Illuminate One Take Acoustic Jams Tour

     Stephen Marley’s One Take Acoustic Jams show is full of beautiful surprises.

     March 16 was a great day for reggae music; as many Jamaicans were rejoicing at the return of Buju Banton, who performed his “Long Walk to Freedom” concert at National Stadium in Kingston after serving a nine year prison sentence in the U.S.  

         Many miles from Jamaica, across the sea on the night of March 17, St. Patrick’s Day,

another historical event took place in Berkeley, CA.

     Grammy winning reggae artist Stephen “”Ragga” Marley brought his One Take Acoustic Jams Tour to the UC Theatre.

    The first beautiful surprise was Marley’s 21-year old daughter, Mystic Marley, who opened the show. As a child, Mystic and her siblings would often join their father in stage at the end of the show.

       Now a grown woman, Mystic took the stage as a solo artist, showing off her robust vocals and deft songwriting skills. Mystic’s vocals have the rebel quality of a Lauryn Hill and the sass of Stephen Marley’s long time backing vocalist, Rica Newell. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f7q-B6ppceE)

        After a short break, Stephen Marley emerged in a cloud of smoke and began playing the conga drums. The stage was beautiful lit in the Rasta colors of red, green and gold by creative consultant Nesta Garrick. A tapestry of Ethiopia’s ruler, Haile Selassie I,  hung above Marley’s head and a gold statue of the Lion of Judah sat by His side.

   

     Marley and his band opened with an Ethiopia-inspired instrumental, telling his story on the acoustic drums and transporting the audience from Africa to the Caribbean to America; and also channeling his iconic father, Bob Marley. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=424UWbAdq4Y).

      “Greetings in the name of His Majesty, Haile I, Selassie I the first, Jah Rastafari!” Marley proclaimed.

      “Love is in the house! Yeah!”

        This set the tone for the rest of the show.

      Another beautiful surprise: Marley was backed by some of finest musicians in the business: Grammy winning producer Lamar “Riff Raff” Brown on keyboards, Ranoy  Gordon on guitar, Christopher Meredith on bass, Wilburn “Squidly” Cole on percussion and Nicholas Laraque on flute, saxophone and clarinet. (Marley and Laraque are the greatest collaboration since Branford Marsalis and Sting).

   A beautiful surprise is that Marley’s One Take Acoustic Jams show is mildly electric, but just enough to give it a symphonic feel. But Marley’s raspy, gut wrenching voice has so much soul that it needs very little musical accompaniment. Like his father, Stephen Marley has a keen sense of harmony and his voice caresses a melody.

    During the one hour minute set, Marley moved the audience with songs of freedom, songs of love and songs of redemption. Marley performed songs made famous by his father, including “Small Axe,” “Rainbow Country,” “Misty Morning” “All Day” and original songs from his award winning albums, “Mind Control” and “Revelation Part 1: The Root of Life” and Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life” Marley even sampled a bit of electronic dance music with “Revatuo Party.”

     The show’s climax was brilliant. Laraque delivered a Rasta-funky clarinet solo while Marley chanted “Jungle Fever” and played the acoustic drums. Then, the band segued into “Bob Marley’ Could You Be Loved” and Marley called Mystic on stage to song with him. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NSirDZb-DAw)

    “This is my daughter!”  !Marley beamed, after giving Mystic a huge hug,

    “Yeah! Generation to Generation.”

      After killing them softly, Marley brought the audience back to earth with his poignant ballad: “It’s Alright,” tapping into the ethos of a generation.

And what's it all for? I don't know
But it must be said, just so you know

   Another beautiful surprise: Marley hosted a paid meet and greet after the show at the UC Theatre after the show. Fans got the opportunity to chat with Marley and even take selfies with him. They walked away with an autograph poster and a copy of his latest CD: “One Take: Acoustic Jams.” Proceeds went to benefit the Ghetto Youths International Foundation, a non profit that Marley set up with his brothers.

By implementing simple changes like compostable dining ware, to elimination of single use cups and food waste diversion programs, California Roots has successfully eliminated almost all landfill waste generated.
 
The 3-day festival has seen impressive numbers to showcase how their environmental partnership with Blue Strike has already made an impact.  For example, in 2018 CaliforniaRoots had just over 24 tons of material recycled, this equates to 3 tons of methane emissions abated or removing 15 cars off the road for an entire year! And since working with Blue Strike California Roots has successfully recycled 70 tons of material generated by the festival, this can be equivalent to 1.31-acre feet of landfill space saved. Similarly, food waste diversion in 2018 alone was 4 tons, which is the weight of 26 gorillas, and to date, they have diverted 18 tons – equivalent to the energy use of 8 homes for 1 year.

Every year Blue Strike works with California Roots to raise the bar for waste diversion. This year the festival is committed to sending zero items to the landfill. They urge fans to be prepared to pack out all non-recyclable or non-compostable items they bring into the festival out with them to help send as little materials to the landfill as possible. “Our motto this year will be ‘pack it in, pack it out’ in hopes to eliminate all non-compostable items,” comments Dan Sheehan festival producer, “we’ve been working towards this goal for the last 9 years with Blue Strike, and we have been very impressed with what we’ve accomplished.” Blue Strike adds, “We are excited to continue another year in pioneering a sustainable music festival with California Roots, built on the foundation of responsible procurement and fan outreach and education. Blue Strike works with Roots to make sure everything they purchase for the event can be recycled, composted or reused. We are asking fans to do the same to help us achieve zero waste."
 
Cali Roots X will take place at the historic Monterey County Fair and Event Center from May 24-26, 2019. J Boog (Jerry Afemata), a reggae singer of samoan descent was born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, CA. He is the youngest of seven brothers and one sister who come from hard working parents that relentlessly instilled a strong cultured household.

Currently residing back and forth between Hawaii and California, J Boog has been working incessantly since the release of his debut album "Hear Me Roar" (2007). He followed that up with his sophomore album "Backyard Boogie" (2011) which topped the US Billboard Charts and iTunes charts in numerous countries. J Boog has shared his craft & has toured around the world: Europe, Africa, Dubai, New Zealand, Australia, The US & Japan all have felt the authenticity of J Boog. 

Jerry helped pave the way for many Polynesian artists with the help of island music pioneer George "Fiji" Veikoso. The two met in 2005. They immediately clicked and created a sound that opened many doors for the Polynesian community. In 2008, J Boog joined Hawaii/San Francisco based recording & record label, Wash House Music Group Inc. Together they've been on a journey thats most promising with endless limits.

Shortly after that, J Boog teamed up with Yami Bolo & Gramps Morgan of reggaeʻs royal family, Morgan Heritage. They embarked on a journey to have J Boog witness the culture of Jamaican music & history. This being Jerryʻs first visit to Jamaica, he was completely overwhelmed & found himself working in historic studios: Bob Marley's "Tuff Gong Studio", Don Corleon's "Hit Maker Studio", Bobby Digitals "Digital B Studio", Shaggy's "Big Yard Studio" & Sugar Minott's "Youth Man Promotions". All very prestigious recording artists & compounds. He was constantly surrounded by several artists he had been influenced by and many of these artists where featured on his 2011 release Backyard Boogie. Backyard Boogie entertained a wide spectrum of reggae fans, old & new. It gave a variety of roots, r&b, lovers rock and good vibes. Hits included: Lets Do It Again produced by Don Corleon and Sunshine Girl produced by Gramps Morgan featuring Morgan Heritage front man Peetah Morgan. 

The success of Backyard Boogie earned J Boog Best Entertainer Award at the 2012 Irawma Awards held in Chicago, IL. A year later, he dropped a 5 song EP called "Live Up" & a mix-tape collaboration with fashionista powerhouse Diamond Supply Co. His most recent EP "Rose Petals" (2016) peaked the US Billboards & iTunes Charts at #1 & was nominated for Best Reggae Album of the Year at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. It featured hip hop mogul Snoop Dog & six time Grammy Award winner Stephen "Ragga" Marley. The Rose Petals EP was just a little foreplay to what would become his next full length album called "Wash House Ting".

A true student of music; you can catch J Boog on world wide tours across the globe, on radio interviews or in the studio working on new material. His humility has gained him true fans everywhere he goes while exercising, MUSIC IS THE ONLY UNIVERSAL TONGUE. Stay tuned....

Inna Vision - "Link Up"

Maui's hard-hitting, Roots Reggae artist, Inna Vision is going hard, being on the road for most of 2018 in the promotion of his latest album "Link Up." The album features a blend of RootsReggae, East Coast Hip-Hop, and the sweet sounds of Polynesian Music. "Link Up" features three tracks, "Highest Grade" "Real Type of Cop" and "Madness" previously released on the "Highest Grade EP" which dropped in March of 2017.

The album "Link Up" was released via Roots Musician Records on June 1st, 2018 and features artists like Producer Rick Haze, Reggae artists Josh Heinrichs and Skillinjah, plus fellow Roots Musician Records artist Gonzo. 

Following the release of the album, the band dropped their music video for the track "O.G IV" which features a heavy bass line, blues-driven keys, and heavy lyrics. With this video, Inna Vision shares the inspiring journey they have gone through from being a kid in Maui with a dream, to make it to the mainland and performing alongside some of Reggae's biggest artists. 


In support of the album "Link Up" Inna Vision hit the mainland to tour throughout the United States spanning Spring, Summer, and Fall, hitting major cities like Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, and New York City. On these tours, Inna Vision shared the stage alongside Julian Marley, Jo Mersa Marley, and Common Kings. Inna Vision even found time in his busy schedule to do a Hawaiin Island Tour in between mainland dates this summer. Following the "Link Up Tour," Inna Vision jumped on tour with SoCal Reggae band Tribal Seeds for nine dates, taking the mic alongside Gonzo to perform their track "Show You Love" off their recent album "Curricular Style.” Still on the way for 2018 is also a "Link Up" Holiday Tour with dates through Florida in December.
 
Releasing "Link Up", the "O.G IV" music video, and touring the mainland was not enough for Inna Vision in 2018 however. After making the move from Maui to the mainland, Inna Vision teamed up with fellow Roots Musician brother Gonzo, on a collaboration album titled, "Curricular Style" released on September 14th, 2018. Coming with a modern mix of Soulful Hip-Hop and RootsReggae, "Curricular Style" features seven never-before-heard songs, and five tracks from previous releases including "So High," "Show You Love" and "Bad Girl."

 
Also featured on the album is the cover of the song "Change the World" made famous by Eric Clapton. The duo recently premiered their brand new music video for their track "Show You, Love." Said by Top Shelf Reggae "Between the two, this duo drives an easy bargain when it comes to conviction! Directed and edited by Brill Adium and his Imagine Whatever Whenever team, the video for "Show You Love" is uplifting, enticing and heartfelt all at the same time."

With the release of "Curricular Style", Inna Vision hit the road with Gonzo in November performing in cities like San Francisco, San Diego, and Las Vegas. Following the West Coast tour, Inna Vision is traveling across the country in December to perform all over the state of Florida after returning from the Welcome To Jamrock Cruise. 
 
Having released two albums, a handful of music videos, and touring throughout the states and the Hawaiian Islands, all in one year, Inna Vision is sure to be an act you won't want to miss! 

Reggae Legends, Israel Vibration, Join the 34th annual Reggae on the River Festival in Humboldt County, CA August 3-5, 2018

Additional Artists of the Iconic Music and Culture Celebration Announced 

REDWAY, CA - High Times Productions, the event-management team for High Times Media in partnership with the Mateel Community Center, announced new lineup additions for this year’s iconic Reggae on the River festival which will be held on August 3-5, 2018 in Piercy, CA (near Garberville in Southern Humboldt County) and includes music and camping.

Reggae legends Israel Vibration will join Iration, Mavado, Morgan Heritage, Busy Signal, The Original Wailers, Arrested Development, Don Carlos, Bambaata Marley, Cham, Wailing Souls, and Hempress Sativa, who will perform across the three-day gathering. More artists are yet to be announced. 

General Admission, VIP, and camping passes are on sale via the Reggae on the River website . 

Through a strategic partnership announced earlier this year, High Times has joined forces with the Mateel Community Center to elevate this cultural landmark to new heights. Providing both resources and direction, the cannabis icon will implement the best practices it has amassed through its years of successful event production to create a world-class experience for Reggae fans and the surrounding community.

The festival was birthed in 1984 as a fundraiser for the Mateel Community Center in Redway and held on land owned by the Arthur family. Originally, it was a one-day musical event to raise money to replace Mateel’s hall, which had been destroyed in a fire. This developing partnership with High Times has provided the center with resources to continue growing and expanding the festival’s reach. 

High Times has assumed all responsibility for the upcoming festival’s talent lineup, marketing, and monetization efforts. The brand is also providing the Mateel Community Center with expertise from its long and successful production history, ensuring that the festival is on par with what the industry has come to expect from its premier brand. 

High Times produces a series of Cannabis Cup events annually as well as several other lifestyle and music events tied to High Times magazine, the oldest and best-known brand in the business of legalized marijuana. Song & Backstory Sends the Message to Youth to Always Persevere, Be Strong and Stay

Focused in the Face of Criticism



The Brand New Cham “I Don’t Care” music video project was made possible when producer

Tullah Carter ran into a longtime acquaintance, Keith “K Dub” William, a legendary artist,

former Oakland school educator, and local community activist who invited her family to his

skateboard event at De Fremery Park in Oakland, CA earlier this year.

The opportunity to produce a video with Cham, (who is known in the Reggae world for his

major hit song Ghetto Story with Alicia Keys), was a blessing as he was the perfect artist to

be featured in this music video. His own life's struggles, as told through his music, speak to

helping build-up underserved communities of young people around the planet.  As a devoted

husband and father, Cham is active with his son life, even on the soccer field, participating as

a Soccer Dad.



The timing was perfect for his participation in the video as he was just releasing his long-awaited

CD, Lawless. The track I Don't Care sends the timely message of “Be strong and focused in

the face of criticism” that needs to be heard by anyone that is able to listen...especially our

inner-city youth that face multiple challenges.

Ms. Carter was overwhelmed by the all of the effort that went into providing this group of

diverse, underserved youth, (mostly boys and a couple of girls), a skateboarding event of such

magnitude! It was like a “skateboard festival”.  She knew K Dub was a master mixed-media

fine artist, a mover-and-shaker from the Long Beach, CA community, and that he had been

transplanted into the Oakland scene years ago, but it was her first time witnessing how he “got

down” in the community with the kids, providing them a solid sporting activity in one of the

most challenging neighborhoods of West Oakland.

The youth-oriented skateboarding event touched her own passion and she felt a strong desire to

bring some attention to this project, the kids and a special place in Oakland called Town Park

Skateboard Park.  While sitting at the park, inspiration struck that she should produce a Reggae

music video about K Dub kids while focusing on his larger-than- life mission of giving back

to the kids and providing a safe place to be afterschool-- thus keeping them off the street

during a crucial time when bad things happen to innocent kids.

As with any successful endeavor, the location is everything and is a big part of this story. K Dub

consciously chose to build the skate park at the historical De Fremery Park, the former



gathering site for the Black Panther Party over 50 years ago; symbolically, bits of Black Panther

theme are used in the video, paying homage to the legacy of a struggle that is still going on.

Another major part of this Oakland-Jamaica- Reggae collaboration is Ms. Carter’s own back

story. Being a hardcore Reggae lover/businesswoman/supporter for many, many years, she was

inspired by the idea of trying this unique story together with the fabulous murals of Town Park

serving as the backdrop, accompanied by the Reggae music of an authentic Jamaican Reggae

Dancehall Artist - Cham a.k.a. Baby Cham.

You cannot create a world-class video without a world-class filmmaker...and that is Benjamin

Lidsky, whom Tullah met in Israel at the Reggae in the Desert Festival while shooting

the “Make A Sacrifice” video with the Reggae artist Queen Omega.  Ben’s energy, vision and

generous spirit made it a magical experience (that is another story), so she knew then that she

wanted to work with him again in the future, for he is a blessed individual. Again, with perfect

timing and a major blessing, Ben was available to fly over and shoot the video.



Finally, all the people who collaborated to make this music video happen were all about Reggae

music…from Oakland to Jamaica to Israel… at the end of the day, we really do Rally round

the Red, Gold, Black, and Green.

Jah9 Releases Video Prosper and Announces West Coast Tour

In celebration of National Reggae Day in Brazil, reggae revivalist Jah9 has released the video for her single ‘Prosper’. The self- produced song illuminates her raw intense vocals, while the gritty black and white visual displays her performing intensely into a microphone with solo shots of her band. 

The release of the video leads the songstress into her Unafraid U.S. West Coast tour beginning May 28th at The Cali Roots Festival. The tour ends mid-June and stops include UCLA, San Diego, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and more.
