Miss Kjah

This Trinidadian and Grenadian singer/songwriter from the United Kingdom is a talent. Her name is Khadijah but she goes by her stage name Miss Kjah. Miss Kjah can sing and write. She takes the old school music and blends it into a reggae song. I like the way she took two of my favorite R&B songs and music and made her own reggae songs. The Teddy Pendergrass’s “Close The Door” and The Floaters “Float On” songs were nicely done. Her version of “Close Da Door” and “Float On” is refreshing. Miss Kjah lyrics are uplifting and energetic. She has the ability to make you want to hear more. That is what I like in musical artists. To put out music that inspires. Miss Kjah is a talented, wonderful artist that is going to be around for years to come. If she keeps putting out good inspirational music and stays true to her craft. Diana King

Diana King is a reggae fusion singer-songwriter, who performs a mixture of R&B, reggae and dancehall. Diana was born on November 8, 1970 in Spanish Town, Jamaica to an Indo-Jamaican father and an Afro Jamaican mother. Diana’s career began after she made an appearance on The Notorious B.I.G.'s 1994 song "Respect," from his album Ready to Die. Diana signed a recording contract with Sony Music. Her first single "Shy Guy", came off her debut album “Tougher Than Love” released in 1995. It was a hit, reaching #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified gold by the RIAA in the U.S. It also hit #2 on the UK Singles Chart and it reached #1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart. The single went on to sell nearly five million singles worldwide. The “Shy Guy” song made the soundtrack to the 1995 film, Bad Boys. Diana King not only sings her reggae and dancehall music that sounds awesome, she also does cover versions of two of my favorite singers. She did a cover version of the song "I Say a Little Prayer" (originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1967) and did a fantastic job. Diana also did a cover version of the Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody”, which was on her second album “Think Like a Girl” released in 1997. Diana released her third album “Respect” on July 24, 2002, in Japan. Eventually it was released in other markets, such as the UK on April 17, 2006 and released digitally in the United States on April 29, 2008. "Summer Breezin” the lead single off this album was played on BET, VH1 video and received some urban radio play. Warrior Girl was Diana’s fourth album, but it was released in the United States (under the title Agirlnameking) on November 8, 2011. Out of all her songs on all four albums, my favorites are “Summer Breezin”, “Shy Guy”, “L L Lies”, “Yu dun Kno”, "Closer", "When We Were Kings" (with Brian McKnight), "Love Triangle" and “Love Me Thru The Night”. Diana King is one of those artists that can sing. I can’t believe I have never heard of her, this lady is a real talent!! Her voice is unbelievable. In her personal life Diana came out as a lesbian. Sisters Tami Chynn & Tessanne Chin

DJ Michael Ealey wanted me to update the Streetwise Radio Big Splif’s 4:20 blog page with a Reggae artist. I had no idea who to write about, so he started suggesting artists that I would like. Michael knows I don’t like the kind of Reggae, which is hard to understand. He suggested Tami Chynn, while I was reading about her I found out she had a sister who also sang Tessanne Chin. Yes they spell their last names different, but they are sisters. I decided to write about both sisters because I think they both are talented. Born in Kingston, Jamaica Tami Chynn is the oldest she was born June 14, 1984 and Tessanne Chin was born September 23, 1985. Their father is Chinese and Cherokee and the mother is Black-Jamaican and British. Tami and Tessanne were exposed to music at a young age; both their parents were in a band called The Carnations. Tami moved to Leamington Spa, UK when she was 14 to study the performing arts. Before Tami became a singer she was a backup dancer for Shaggy. Tessanne on the other hand was performing at the age of 6 with Cathy Levy's "Little People and Teen Players club" one of the top performing arts schools in Jamaica. Tessanne at the age of 12 moved to England and she got her first taste of cultural diversity and she coped with it by writing songs. Tami signed her first record deal in early 2005 with Universal Motown Records she was 24. Tami released her debut album in 2006 called “Out of Many...One”, I really like this album it show how talented she is. Tessanne released her debut album "In Between Words" on December 6, 2010. These girls have performed alongside and collaborated with of some great artist. Tami has performed with international Reggae stars: Beenie Man, Lady Saw and on Sean Paul’s album The Trinity on the track "All on Me". Tami has also performed with Akon and alongside Verne Troyer, T-Pain, Shaggy, Lady GaGa, Natasha Bedingfield and Colby O'Donis. As for Tessanne she also collaborated with Shaggy on "Never Let Go", Trinidadian Soca band Kes on ("Loving You") and was featured on a track with the Legendary Jamaican band Third World on the song "By My Side". Tami and Tessanne have to different styles and voices. Tami is Pop/Reggae and Tessanne’s is more R an B/Reggae, I really like both of them. Tessanne singing style in influenced some of my favorite singers Aretha Franklin, Skunk, Pat Benatar, Diana King, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Bob Marley and late great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. Here are some songs I really like of Tami’s, “Hyperventilating”, “Frozen ft. Akon”, “Over and Over Again”, “Tell Mi Seh (Styled by Fifi Bell).flv”, “Neva Know” and “Forever Your Girl”. As for Tessanne’s songs they are “Hideaway”, “Black Books”, “Messanger”, “Broken Melody”, “Loving You w/ Kes”, “Are Yuh Gonna” and “Control (Are You Gonna)”. These two sisters can sing, they both have voices that could rival some of these superstars, they are so underrated. Listen to some of their songs on Streetwise Radio. Taddy P.

Without a doubt, Taddy P is one of Jamaica’s finest bass player, writer and producer.  With a cool and even-tempered disposition, this native son of Montego Bay is truly blessed with a musical gift.

Taddy P’s early musical influences can be traced to the Church, as he was part of the group choir which he also conducted, and to his former school Herbert Morrison Comprehensive High School.

Taddy P’s first instrument was the trombone, which he played from 7th-9th grade in his High School Band. It was at age 13, that he discovered the bass guitar. His music teachers, Professor Grimes, Snick Glenn and Carl Mathews, persuaded him to try out the bass instrument, right after the bass player from the school band graduated.  Taddy P’s first bass guitar was a piece of board cut to the shape of a guitar, with fish line for strings.

Within a short space of time Taddy P attained sufficient competence to be the school bands bassist. He P graduated High School in 1989 as an outstanding music student, and continued through with further studies in the Fundamentals of Music Theory at Royal School of Music in London, England and Sam Sharpe Teachers College in Montego Bay. Subsequently, he was a music teacher at Herbert Morrison Comprehensive, where he taught Band Techniques, Music Theory and Conducting.

It is not surprising that Taddy P became such a good bass player because he had excellent schooling. He attributes his success at mastering the instrument to endless hours of practice and sheer hard work, honing a hard-driving, steady, well-rounded and infectious bass style. Taddy P’s inspirations were Aston Barrett, Glenn Browne, Nathan East, Marcus Miller, Verdine White and Stanley Clark.

Taddy P’s experience in Jazz, Popular and Reggae Music earned him a reputation that had several bands, both large and small, inviting him to be a part of their group. He performed in bands from 1991 through to 1996 on the North Coast in Jamaica, in hotels such as Seawind Beach Resort,Hedonism II, Wyndham Rosehall, Sandals Resorts and Swept Away Resort. These performances set the stage, showcasing Taddy P’s talent that soon caught the eyes of various Jamaican Celebrity Entertainers and/Artists.

It was no surprise when Taddy P started to perform for Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Rita Marley, Tanya Stephens, Shabba Ranks, Yellow Man, Sanchez, and Monifah in international arenas in Japan, Europe, Africa, the United States, Canada and various Caribbean Islands.

In 1997, internationally known reggae artist Maxi Priest, intrigued with Taddy P’s style, contracted him as his personal bass player and from there on their partnership continues until present. His current drive to produce music is indicative of his success as a professional bass player. Taddy P began experimenting with harmonies, melodies, rhythmic beats and booming bass lines that have him working feverishly in studios producing new music for Maxi Priest, Big Mountain and Patra.

It is this kind of passion and total commitment to his craft that makes Taddy P stand out from the rest. And to document and share his musical experiences and versatility, he produced and released his first 12 track album “Bass Inna Yu Face”, with the title track written and performed by Crissy Love, and promoted heavily on CD Baby.

Having surprised fans with his fusion of reggae, dancehall, jazz, hip hop and salsa on this album, Taddy P is soon set to release another album which will delight and satisfy the palettes of his adoring fans.  And just what can fans expect of the new album?  He insists that it will be a wicked collaboration of artists and of different genres of music, similar to the magical collaborations found on any Santana’s album.  One of reggae’s finest artist, Tanya Stephens is featured on this new album on the track “Heart of Stone”, and already receiving a lot of airplay.

One thing is for certain, Taddy P is always ahead of the game. Always striving to improve and develop himself not just as an artist, but as a producer and a mentor.  When not on tour or in the studio producing music, he can be found in the classroom of Herbert Morrison Comprehensive High School.  It is here that Taddy P teaches 50-100 children each week how to play instruments, and encourages them to develop their abilities as young, promising musicians, and giving back to the same learning institution that helped shape him into the phenomenal artist, writer and producer that he is today

As the Hope Diamonds is an American national treasure, the Mighty Diamonds are Jamaican national treasures.

Every reggae fan has at least one favorite song by the Mighty Diamonds:

"Pass the Kutchie," "Right Time," "Master Plan" “Tamarind Farm” “I Need a Roof,” and the list goes on. Formed in Trench Town, 1969, Jamaica's premier harmony trio continue to tour and perform, celebrating more than 40 years of making music, from the most militant roots reggae to the sweetest lover's rock.

The Mighty Diamonds--Fitzroy, "Bunny" Simpson, Donald "Tabby" Shaw and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson--know what soul is all about.

The three reggae warriors have risen from the poverty and despair of inner city Kingston to become learned reggae ambassadors who have traveled throughout Europe, the U.S., Africa and Japan spreading the gospel of harmony and emancipation from mental slavery.

“Right Time,” The Mighty Diamonds’ breakthrough album on the Channel One label, elevated the group to rock star status in 1975. Produced by Joseph Hoo Kim, "Right Time" brought together the Jamaican musical elite such as Sly and Robbie (drum and bass) and Ancel Collins (keyboards) and generated hits such as "Africa," "Have Mercy" "Natural Natty," "Them Never Love Poor Marcus" and the reggae party album, "Pass the Kutchie," which has been sampled by everyone from Lauryn Hill to Michael Franti to Wyclef Jean.

                In a 2009 interview, Wavy Gravy of the Grateful Dead praised the Mighty Diamonds: “I first heard them in Jamaica and I was blown away. Every time I get a chance to see the Mighty Diamonds, I’m thrilled to do it. “I think they’re fantastic—and fun.”

Led by Tabby's soul stirring tenor, their live show is a journey through the African Diaspora from gospel to R&B to roots reggae and dancehall, including covers of songs by the Stylistics ("Country Living") Bob Marley, ("Get Up, Stand Up") Curtis Mayfield ("It's All Right to Have a Good Time") Jester Hairston ("Amen") and Alton Ellis ("Still in Love").

Along with having more than solo recordings that they can count under their belts, the Mighty Diamonds have appeared on a number of compilations including "Is it Rolling Bob? A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan" (Sanctuary, 2004), "Old to the New" A Steely & Clevie Tribute to Joe Gibbs Classics" (VP, 2002) and "Fire on the Mountain: Reggae Celebrates the Grateful Dead ("Pow Wow, 1996). During the Christmas season, the Diamonds' lively version of "Frosty the Snowman" (Ras Records) is a hit with young and old. In 2009, the Diamonds released "Special Lady," a remake of Ray, Goodman and Brown’s 1980’s ballad, on their independent label, Street Corner Music.

The Mighty Diamonds have received a number of lifetime achievement awards. In 2006, following their performance at Reggae Sunsplash in Ocho Rios, the Diamonds received a prestigious national award from former prime minister Portia Simpson Miller for their artistic contribution to Jamaican culture.

In November, 2009, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke recognized the Mighty Diamonds with a Congressional Proclamation for their 40 years of hits and contributions to the music industry, when TSO Productions and the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music held their 5th annual Reggae Culture Salute at Nazareth High School Performance Center, Brooklyn, NY. In honor more than 40 years together as a vocal trio, the Mighty Diamonds received the Ragga Muffins Festival Award of Recognition on Feb. 21, 2010.

                Following their performance at the sold out 29^th annual Ragga Muffins reggae festival at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, CA, Bunny, Tabby and Judge were presented with trophies on behalf of the festival and Moss Jacobs Presents.

                “The blessings are there; and we are here to share them; that is the most important thing,” said Shaw, who has been the Mighty Diamonds’ lead vocalist since he was a teenager.

                This year, the Mighty Diamonds released their latest single “Back ‘A Wall,” which Bunny says, is sure to be a hit.

This summer, the Mighty Diamonds returned to New Orleans, backed by the internationally renowned Yellow Wall Dub Squad. The Mighty Diamonds have a rich history and connection with Crescent City. Bunny Diamond recalled being influenced by New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey and the Meters during their early years. In 1977, the Kingston-based singers traveled to New Orleans to record the historic album “Ice on Fire,” with award winning songwriter/producer Allen Toussaint. “Ice on Fire” blends traditional reggae and New Orleans riddims, featuring Toussaint classics such as “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley, “Get out of My Life Woman,” and Mighty Diamonds early hits such as “Country Living.”

                Toussaint recalled the Mighty Diamonds professionalism and creativity in the recording studio.

                “When I’m working with artists, I try and tailor things to fit them, as if you’re a fashion designer and making a dress to fit just you,” said Toussaint. “Whenever I can, that’s the way it’s done. Of course, sometimes you’ll get a group like the Mighty Diamonds, where you don’t have to do that, because they come in with all their materials and all you have to do is put on a safety pin here and there, but they’ve got it together already. I must say that they were so prepared when they got there, there was very little to do but let them in.”

Anuhea

Born on December 10, 1985 as Rylee Anuheake’alaaokaokelani Jenkins but known as “Anuhea” is the oldest of three sibling’s two brothers and one sister. Anuhea was born and raised on the Hawaiian island of Maui; Anuhea is of Caucasian, Hawaiian and Chinese descent. I’m writing about this young artist because Michael Ealey told me about her, he said I would like her and he was right. Anuhea is folk rock, Reggae love song singer songwriter; she is a rare gem with all the qualities to become a star. Anuhea can sing she released her debut album “Anuhea” in 2009. In 2010 Anuhea released an Estelle cover “Come Over Love” this song hit number one all over Hawaii and Pacific Island radio stations. I see myself listening to this song with your honey sitting on the couch or riding in the car on a Sunday afternoon. I like all of her music, like when she is simply playing the acoustic guitar on the songs “Right Love, Wrong Time”, “Charismatic S.O.B.” and when she is singing “Simple Love Song”. Anuhea’s song “Crown Royal” is one of my favorites, girl can write some lyrics. Anuhea is a refreshing change and she can sing all of her music is Hot! Sharp hails from the picturesque island of Jamaica a talented soccer player with a promising future, could not deny his undying love for the music. Sharp’s musical endeavors transcend way beyond being just an MC his musical background includes a B.A. in the Music Industry which he acquired from The College at Oneonta in New York. Sharp first realized his musical talents with close friendRudy in Jamaica (R.I.P). He discovered his versatility and way with words and encouraged Sharp 
to battle rival DJ’s in school and local parties. However, it wasn’t until he met up with Empogen high 
school classmate and started writing songs performing at various class parties and Teen Star 
competitions. Being around music watching and listening to his mom singing and playing the guitar 
and was also a die hard fan of reggae great Terror Fabulous was instrumental in his pursuing a 
career in music. Sharp recorded his first song professionally in late 2006 that was followed by a 
string of performances in New York, Toronto, Canada and Atlanta Georgia Sharp now resides in 
Miami Florida joined forces with his cousin Sean Mccorkell and started their own company BBK 
Entertainment notable performances opening act for a few well known reggae stars, Sanchez, 
Capleton and Mr. Vegas to name a few. Sharp is currently working on his debut album entitled “All 
or Nothing” which features the hit single “Money Right”.

Biography

Dave A. Munroe aka RAS D a star out of Kingston, Jamaica started writing and performing at a young age.  One of his first songs written that charted was named LASCO it was performed by FLOUREGAN (1997).

He then started performing in many venues across Jamaica which led to a tour of the United States accompanying Andrew Tosh, Son of Steppin' Razor Peter Tosh.

RAS D is now living in Northern California where he has used his international influences to promote and inspire his album which was recorded in Oakland, California, “GIVE SOME LOVE TODAY” débuted (2004).  This album features all original lyrics and music by RAS D.  It includes performances by Andrew Tosh, JR Toots, Brendan Munroe, Under-P and Regina Espinoza.  It was motivated by JAH and fuelled by his passion and experiences touring.  This album encapsulates what is known today as Reggae.

Inspired by the success of his first album and industry accolades, RAS D went on to give us the next innovative album called “LOVE WITH MEANING”. The truly thought provoking songs on this album is true to his roots and keeping his Jamaican message alive.
